Septic permits in Blount County, TN

The rules, the agency, and what happens before anyone can dig.

Requirements

Blount County is one of nine Tennessee counties that run their own septic program, so you apply to the county and not to the state. The office is the Blount County Department of Environmental Health at 1221 McArthur Road in Maryville, phone 865-681-9301, open weekdays 8 to 4:30.

The department handles septic permits (it calls the drawing a layout), repair requests, site evaluations, inspection letters for a home sale and subdivision reviews. It also keeps its own lists of soil scientists, installers and pumpers, which is the fastest way to find someone the county already works with.

Fees are not posted online. The county has a fee schedule page, but it was empty when we read it in September 2026, so call for the current permit and repair fees before you budget.

These are the county-level specifics. For the full permit process, soil-test rules, and installer licensing that apply across the state, see the Tennessee septic permit guide.
