Septic permits in Hamilton County, TN
The rules, the agency, and what happens before anyone can dig.
Requirements
Hamilton County (Chattanooga, Hixson) runs its own program through the Hamilton County Groundwater Department, 1250 Market Street, Suite 3046, Chattanooga, phone 423-209-7876. Every application is filed online through the county's OpenGov portal; paper is not accepted.
Before you apply, stake the house site and tell the office it is ready. Fees are due up front and are not refundable. The county publishes its own list of installers and pumpers.
About the fee: the county's forms do not agree. One new permit form lists $440 per dwelling, which includes a $40 administration fee. An older looking form lists $400, no charge for a repair permit, and $80 per lot for a lot review. Neither form is dated, so expect $400 to $440 and confirm when you file.
