Septic permits in Maury County, TN

The rules, the agency, and what happens before anyone can dig.

Requirements

Maury County does not run its own septic office. Permits come from the state: the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), Division of Water Resources, working out of the Columbia Environmental Field Office, 1421 Hampshire Pike, Columbia, TN 38401. The septic assistance line for this office is (931) 800-9256. That covers Columbia.

State fees apply here: $400 for a new conventional system permit (up to 1,000 gallons a day) plus a $100 construction inspection. An alternative system is $500 plus a $200 inspection. A repair permit is free, with a $100 inspection. Apply online through TDEC's septic service request, or on paper form CN-0971 at the field office.

TDEC may ask for a soils map from an approved private soil consultant before it will lay out a system. Review usually takes about 10 days and by rule must finish within 45. The permit is good for three years. When the installer is done, the system has to be inspected by the TDEC environmental scientist before it is covered.
